Wayne Hutchinson
Research Portfolio Manager, FRDC
“AMR stands as one of the most critical challenges faced by global food production industries, and aquaculture is no exception.”
Wayne Hutchinson has spent nearly three decades immersed in the world of aquaculture research, with a particular focus on hatchery production of marine finfish. His passion for innovation and technology has taken him across the global aquaculture industry, keeping pace with advancements that drive sustainability and production efficiency. As a Research Portfolio Manager at the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC), he now works to support a broad range of Australian aquaculture industries by facilitating research and development initiatives that address key challenges.
At FRDC, Wayne collaborates with industry and research partners to identify critical R&D priorities and turn them into actionable projects. One such collaboration is with SAAFE—FRDC is co-investing in research to develop a Lactococcus vaccine for the freshwater trout industry—a vital step in protecting fish health and ensuring sustainable production.
Wayne is keenly aware of the growing threat posed by AMR and the potential consequences if left unaddressed. He emphasizes that AMR is a challenge of significant scale, with far-reaching impacts that extend beyond human health to agriculture, aquaculture, and environmental systems. He brings this awareness to his role with SAAFE’s Industry Research Advisory Committee.
Outside of work, Wayne enjoys being an appreciative spectator, taking in everything from local sports to live music and entertainment performances. Guided by his motto, "Find a way to say yes," he approaches both his professional and personal life with an open mind and a drive to support solutions that make a lasting impact.
