Emi Schutz

Assistant Director, Permits Team, APVMA

"What we do in one sector has the potential to affect others—it’s all connected. Recognizing that interconnection is the key to tackling AMR."

When it comes to pesticide and veterinary medicine regulation, Emi Schutz plays a key role in guiding APVMA’s Permits team, working alongside her colleagues to ensure that agricultural and veterinary chemicals meet Australia’s high safety, efficacy, and trade standards. From minor-use permits for specialty crops to emergency approvals during pest outbreaks, Emi helps make science-based decisions that support Australian agriculture.

With a Master of Philosophy from The University of Adelaide focusing on microbial biosynthesis of grape metabolites, Emi joined APVMA through its graduate program and has since taken on several roles across the organisation. Now, she brings her expertise to SAAFE’s Policy & Regulatory Advisory Committee, contributing to discussions on policy and regulatory challenges.

Outside of work, Emi enjoys the challenge of aerial hoop, a hobby that keeps her both active and creative. When she’s not practicing aerial arts, she spends time with her two greyhounds, who offer a more relaxed counterbalance to her adventurous pursuits. If she had the chance to share a conversation with Sir David Attenborough, she’d relish the opportunity to hear his insights on science, storytelling, and the natural world.

Guided by the motto, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better,” Emi is committed to evidence-based science, collaboration, and continuous learning.
