Dr Lisa Kirkland

Education and Training Program Manager

"Building the next generation of AMR experts isn’t just about education—it’s about creating opportunities, fostering collaboration, and leaving a lasting impact."

Lisa Kirkland’s career has been defined by her passion for microbiology and its real-world applications. Beginning her academic journey in Health Sciences, she quickly found her niche in microbial ecology, earning an Honours degree and an industry-linked PhD in aquatic microbial ecosystems. From there, Lisa’s expertise led her into diverse and impactful roles, including analytical microbiology in air and water quality and pioneering work in the gut microbiome sector. Her contributions have ranged from setting up a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) cleanroom facility to overseeing the world’s first TGA-approved faecal microbiota transplant (FMT) product, demonstrating her ability to translate cutting-edge science into tangible outcomes.

Lisa thrives on challenges and embraces opportunities that push the boundaries of research and innovation. She has built and led teams in both academic and commercial sectors, mentoring Honours and PhD students and helping to establish industry-linked PhD scholarships and internships. Her ability to connect industry and research makes her a natural fit for her role as Education and Training Program Manager at SAAFE, where she aims to build a world-class program that will develop a new generation of AMR experts.

She sees her biggest opportunity at SAAFE in shaping a legacy that extends beyond the CRC itself—creating a training and development program that equips scholars with the skills and networks to drive change in AMR long into the future. With experience spanning research, industry, and business operations, Lisa is well-positioned to design an education program that bridges both worlds, ensuring that SAAFE scholars are not only knowledgeable but also industry ready.

Her interest in AMR began in her postgraduate studies, where she first recognized the widespread presence of antimicrobial resistance in aquatic systems. Working in air and water disinfection deepened her understanding of AMR’s far-reaching impacts, and her work in the gut microbiome field further reinforced the importance of tackling this global challenge. She is particularly passionate about raising awareness that AMR extends far beyond human medicine, affecting industries such as water, agriculture, and food.

Beyond her professional achievements, Lisa is always looking for new ways to challenge herself, with a current focus on expanding her expertise in business operations. When she’s not working, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, trying the latest brunch spots and caravanning with her young family. With a passion for learning, collaboration, and making a meaningful impact, Lisa is ready to help shape the future of AMR education and research at SAAFE.
